Description
Our Antibiotic/Antimycotic Solution is used to prevent bacterial and fungal contamination in cell culture applications. It contains a combination of penicillin and streptomycin, acting against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and amphotericin B, which acts against yeast and multicellular fungi.
The Antibiotic/Antimycotic Solution is provided as a ready-to-use 100x concentrate – no solubilization necessary. This product is viable for tissue culture, bacteria media, and many other applications.
Penicillins belong to the β-lactam family and act by inhibiting an essential enzyme for the synthesis of new membrane components (D-Alanin-Transpeptidase). Therefore penicillin is only effective on actively dividing cells.
Streptomycin, on the other hand, acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome. This mechanism inhibits protein synthesis within the bacterium, regardless of whether the cell is actively dividing or not.
Amphotericin B is a fungizide that binds with ergosterol in the fungus membrane, leading to formation of pores. By this process, the fungus starts leaking important ions, finally resulting in cell death.
Streptomycin, on the other hand, works by attaching to the bacterial ribosome’s 30S subunit. Whether or not the cell is actively dividing, this process prevents the bacteria from producing proteins.Amphotericin B is a fungizide that forms holes in the fungus membrane when it interacts with the ergosterol present there. Through this process, the fungus begins to release significant ions, ultimately leading to cell death.
